The South African National Energy Research Institute (SANERI) was established as a public entity entrusted with the coordination and undertaking of public interest energy research, development and demonstration by the then Minister of Minerals and Energy during October 2004. SANERI is a subsidiary of CEF (Pty) Ltd, the state energy company in South Africa. SANERI solicits work from reputable service providers, academic institutions and the private sector. A significant focus is placed on the co-operation and the development of a collaborative environment.
In order to optimise infrastructure and accelerate research paths, SANERI has created research centres. One of the research centres is the South African Centre for Carbon Capture and Storage (SACCCS). This was established in March 2009 as a division within SANERI and is governed by a Charter that has an initial five year plan.
The mission of SACCCS is to be the leading authority for all carbon capture storage related activities in South Africa. Its main objective is to prepare and promote the construction of a safe and reliable carbon capture and demonstration plant in South Africa. SACCCS will also develop human capital by offering bursaries, supporting student projects and supporting school projects.
